World’s first air taxi that can fly using hydrogen cells and batteries together
February 28, 2025Sambo+Mobility is a Korean company with a distinct interest in carbon-free flight. It is showcasing its latest HAM III-2 hybrid electric flying taxi at the CES 2025 expo. By all accounts we could be seeing this hydrogen-battery air taxi combi in the air fairly soon. At the very least, the HAM III-2 specification is an improvement over its HAM III-1 model, both in terms of payload and predicted performance.
What the HAM III-2 Hydrogen-Battery Air Taxi Could Do
The two-seater hybrid aircraft is a significant leap forward in the urban air mobility space, according to MSN news channel. Although elsewhere, both Interesting Engineering and MSN state that the air vehicle design is for ‘multiple passengers’. To us this seems more likely, given the length of the fuselage in images we have seen.
The Sambo+Mobility website confirms that the design wingspan is thirty feet, the height fifteen feet, and the weight 1,875 pounds. This adds up to the HAM III-2 hydrogen-battery air taxi being a serious attempt to get the urban air mobility sector off the ground, and into the air.
More Information About the Sambo+Mobility Flying Taxi
By all available information, the four up-and-down wing-mounted lifters, and the two rear-mounted propellers should make the HAM III-2 highly maneuverable at low altitude above city streets.
The batteries will kick in during silent take off and landing phases, while the hydrogen power unit will take over during lower-energy cruising. We understand that this combination will deliver the following performance:
-
Cruising speed of 110 miles per hour.
-
Flying range of as much as 62 miles.
-
Maximum time in the air 40 minutes.
Sambo motors suggests that their air mobility vehicle will begin testing early in 2025. We would have liked to have seen photographs of the actual vehicle on the ground. But we suppose there is marketing logic in keeping them under wraps, until the timing is right.
